Our approach to design

Whether you’re renovating an entire property or just updating a few rooms, remodeling your home can be daunting. There are myriad decisions to be made, and taking the time to address each aspect of the process prior to starting construction is critical to your success — and to your peace of mind. Our objective is to guide you through this process from start to finish.

Development
There is rarely one way to approach a project. We can help you define your goals and identify how they can be achieved within your budget. We will provide drawings and plans that will help clarify your vision and ensure that it is achievable, functional and consistent with the overall aesthetic of your home. At this point, we will have a comprehensive “rough” plan that considers all the major components of construction — room layouts, electrical and plumbing placement, lighting requirements, and estimated surface quantities.

Budgeting
During plan development, we encourage clients to incorporate everything on their wish list. Once the rough plan is established — prior to specific design details — it’s wise to begin speaking with general contractors. This step will give you a good idea of the potential project cost, which could lead to plan revisions that will impact the more detailed design phase. While our firm does not directly engage the contractor, we can help guide you through
the selection and bidding process. Does the contractor have the necessary skill set for your project? Is their cost proposal comprehensive? Is their timeline realistic? Our goal is to help you avoid significant surprises once construction is underway.

Details
Once the project scope is established, we begin finalizing the specifics of the plan and sourcing materials, including surfaces, plumbing and lighting fixtures, hardware, and cabinetry. We provide detailed drawings to the contractor in order to ensure accuracy and accelerate the construction process.

Oversight
We feel it is important that the designer be on site to monitor the construction progress. While the contractor has ultimate responsibility for the underlying quality of their work, we will be there to ensure that the finished product is consistent with the design directives.
